DESKTOP APP DEVELOPMENT

Make a tool for repetitive tasks.

An app installed on Windows or Mac. For people with website-building experience who want to work with local files and everyday desktop tasks.

Check suitability before building

01Which projects fit this form?

Batch file organization, media processing, local search and offline desktop work where installation provides useful file access or system integration beyond a browser solution.

02What should be ready before you start building?

Builders who can choose one OS, test on it, and handle installation, permissions, upgrades and recovery. One OS is easier to verify than three at once.

03Which projects should consider a different form?

Projects for occasional phone use, shared work without local integration, or users who cannot install software. A simple batch task may need only a script rather than a complete desktop UI.

04Which missing prerequisites should you resolve first?

Builders lacking the target OS for testing, unable to support installation/updates, or planning destructive batch work on originals without preview, backup and recovery.

Still unsure? Try a small validation

Run on copies of three files on the target computer; verify preview, output and recovery. Before sharing, test packaging, permissions and updates.

Without essential local integration, compare a no-install web option; try a script for one-off automation.

Start with a small first version

01 / START
FOR EXAMPLE · AN ILLUSTRATION

A file-organizing assistant

Choose a folder, preview the changes, and save copies to a new location. Keep the originals.

Choose one platform first

Check installation, file access, cancellation, and updates on the target Windows computer.

Three things to prepare

  • Choose Windows or Mac first
  • Prepare a few safe sample copies
  • Know where input and output files belong

The route from idea to product

02 / BUILD

Finish one small step, check it through actual use, then move on. Open each step to see the expected result.

01Choose one repetitive task

Describe the current workflow and what the tool should handle.

Afterwards, you should see: One clear, repeatable task.
02Choose a system and prepare copies

Target one operating system and use a small set of sample files.

Afterwards, you should see: The original information stays untouched.
03Preview before confirming

Show the before-and-after result for each file.

Afterwards, you should see: The changes can be reviewed before confirmation.
04Check saving and interruptions

Try duplicate names, save failures, cancellation, and reopening.

Afterwards, you should see: No silent overwrites or lost files.
05Install on another computer

Use a computer without development tools to install and run it.

Afterwards, you should see: An installer that actually works.
06Release, update, and recover

Explain downloads, test updates, and plan how to retain data.

Afterwards, you should see: People can use the tool and know what to do if something goes wrong.

Ask AI to check project fit

03 / PROMPT

Assess the form, without building

Edit the template with actual material, confirm, then copy into the current project conversation. Mark unknowns as undecided and replace examples as needed.

What to check when stuck

Batch processing produces unexpected results

Preview old names, new names, and destinations for three file copies. Are they correct?

  • Run the small batch and compare; increase size only after originals and cancellation are verified.
  • Stop, provide the copy folder and expected mapping, and correct the rule before touching originals.
The app does not open on another computer

Record OS, package version, and full message. Does only the target machine fail?

  • Have AI check target builds, signing, and dependencies; disabling system protection is not a general fix.
  • If the build also fails locally, return to the last working version and inspect startup records.

Record the version, device, test data, steps, expected outcome, actual result, and failures. Keep AI execution records separate from personal trial results.
